Guide to Vapes for Beginners
What is a Vape Starter Kit?
If you are just starting out, Vaping can be very confusing. There are so many products on the market, making it difficult to know which one is best for you. A vape mod starter kit or vape starter kit is exactly what it sounds like, a complete starter kit with everything included to start vaping right away. (Except for the e-liquid and in some cases batteries).
The key elements of any vape kit are the battery and atomizer. An atomizer is the part of an e-cig or tank which contains a coil that will heat up the e-liquid and therefore convert it into vapor. The battery is what provides the power to heat the atomizer and coil.
So, let’s take a look at the various types of vaping starter kits on the market.
Most of the earliest designs of e-cigarettes were made to resemble an actual cigarette, hence the name cig-a-like. Since then, the technology in vaping products has progressed; however, many smokers still like this style of device because it simulates the physical process of smoking a cigarette.
When using a cig-a-like, it feels like you are holding and inhaling from a traditional cigarette, except there is vapor instead of smoke. These starter kits will include a rechargeable battery that attaches to an e-liquid cartridge. Some may come in a disposable format.
Disposable vapes are becoming the most popular vape devices in the vaping industry, and that’s because they are the best vape starter kit for beginners. Disposable vapes come pre-filled with e-liquid, so they don’t require a filling system or any understanding of PG/VG ratios. They have in-built coils within them, so the user doesn’t need to worry about coil resistance. The battery is used until depletion, so typically, they don’t require charging.
Disposable vapes also do not have any confusing settings or fire buttons, and they work solely through draw activation. They are possibly the closest experience you can get to smoking. You just need to open the device and start vaping, then dispose of it once it is out of liquid or battery.
Vape Pens and eGo Starter Kits
The next evolution of the vape starter kit came with eGo style batteries and vape pens. The battery is slightly thicker and usually comes with some variation of a tank that you can refill compared to buying prefilled cartridges. The advantages to an eGo pen vape kit over a cig-a-like are; improved battery life, increased vapor production, and in many cases, better flavor. Because of this, many people start with eGo-style vape pens or eventually upgrade to them from cig-a-likes. These beginner vape kits are also relatively inexpensive.
Vape pen starter kits come in various styles; some may have a vape tank, while others have a replaceable pod tank. If you want something more cost-effective than a disposable vape, either a vape pen or a pod mod kit is a good investment.
Box Mods & Vape Mods
So by now, you have probably noticed people on the streets holding large boxes and exhaling large clouds and wondered exactly what they are using. Those are called box mods or vape mods, and although they look nothing like eGo pens, they work in the same fashion, and both create vapor.
The main difference is that a vape mod kit can put out a lot more power, which can generally lead to better vapor. Most vape mod starter kits will come with some kind of tank included.
Most box mods, especially box mod starter kits, are regulated. This means they contain a computer chip that will regulate the power based on your preference.
Note: There are unregulated box mods. However, these are highly unrecommended for beginners and will probably never be included in a starter kit geared towards new vapers.
There are unregulated box mod vape kits. However, these are highly unrecommended for beginners and will probably never be included in a starter kit geared towards new vapers.
So the box mod is essentially the power source, and then you have a tank that will contain and vaporize the e-liquid. All tanks have a threaded pin at the bottom, which screws directly onto the vape mod. Nearly every box mod on the market will use what is called a standard 510 connection to attach a tank or atomizer.
There are so many types of vape tanks now out that even us advanced vapers can get confused. However, they can all generally be broken down into two types of draw categories; either MTL (mouth-to-lung) or DTL (direct-to-lung).
An MTL tank will allow the type of pull or draw that you usually associate with a traditional cigarette. It is typically a two-step process of; taking a pull, so vapor enters the mouth and then inhaling it into the lungs – just like a regular smoker would.
A direct-to-lung or direct-lung vape is when you inhale directly into your lungs in one motion. For this style of vaping, these tanks usually have larger air holes (known as airflow), which helps create a looser, airier draw.
Most tanks come with adjustable airflow, which helps vapers to find their own personal airflow and inhale balance. However, it’s challenging for manufacturers to make a tank that can completely satisfy both MTL and DTL vapers. Due to this, you will see most tanks being marketed directly to each type of vaper.
AIO (all-in-one) refers unsurprisingly to vape starter kits that come with everything you need in one device. The unique feature of an AIO device is that the tank is integrated with the battery, meaning you can’t separate them.
AIO devices are great for new vapers, or people who want a vaping device but don’t know where to start and don’t want the complexities of different tanks, etc. AIO starter vape kits are almost like a plug & play device. They are ideal for anyone wanting a simple vaping solution. There are great choices available on the market for all vapers.
Pod mods are like evolved versions of cig-a-likes and make for a great starter kit. Although they don’t necessarily look like a cigarette, they share the same features as cig-a-likes with a mouth-to-lung type draw and pre-filled e-liquid pods. They are directed toward smokers who want a simple solution and maybe feel that vaping is too complicated for them.
Pod mods make things so much more simplistic for novice vapers. Although these types of devices can be frowned upon by experienced vapers because of the limited juice selection and proprietary components, it’s important to remember what it’s like when you start vaping. There is no more straightforward or cost-effective solution to help smokers transition into vaping.
